About Keshet Dance and Center for the Arts

Founded in 1996, Keshet is an Albuquerque-based non-profit organization which exists to inspire and unite community by fostering unlimited possibilities through dance, mentorship and a creative space for the arts.  Uniting the arts, the artist and the audience, Keshet invites each person to engage, experience and be inspired through bold explorations of movement and celebrations of community.

Shira Greenberg believes that the arts are a vehicle for change, and that every person is inherently an artist.  By honoring and utilizing our creative resources we build strength as individuals and as a community. One of Keshet’s primary programs is M3 (Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis) which uses the vehicle of dance to engage, educate, and empower incarcerated and paroling youth. Operating within the State of New Mexico’s Juvenile Detention Center for the past 20 years, Keshet is now codifying the M3 curriculum and will be launching the program nationally, starting with twenty US communities over the next five years, through its newest initiative – Movement for Mercy.

Shira’s work has been recognized by the New Mexico Governor’s Office and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.  She has been the recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr Multicultural Council’s Keep the Dream Alive Award for “creating an environment where the medium of dance is used to build cross-cultural and social bridges to every aspect of society”; a guest of Romania’s Ministry of Culture, speaking on Keshet’s unique arts initiatives; and a cultural ambassador for the City of Albuquerque in Rehovot, Israel.
